Any pistol used for self defense needs to have sights heavy enough to allow for them to be used to rack the slide. Metal sights are much better than plastic pistol sights for these purposes. It is also important that the sights are not beveled in such a way that doesn't allow you to catch them on your belt, holster or other hard surface.

The sights on my Springfield Operator 1911 are metal but are angled in such a way that makes catching them on something to rack the slide much more difficult.

My Canik Mete SFT has sights that have a ledge on them specifically designed to be used for single handed pistol manipulation by being beveled to catch on surfaces and help you work the action.
