Scarification and Stratification of Mimosa Seeds
Here I go over a quick explanation of the difference in scarification and stratification of mimosa seeds. I am using a quick way to scarify the seeds by using my knife to cut the end of the seed. This allows water into the seeds so they can germinate quicker. There are many ways to scarify seeds and this is just one of them. The seeds have a hard coating on them that eliminates them from germinating in the middle of winter. Not all seeds need this and you will have to find out which ones do. Some seeds also require stratification, which is a dormant period that the seeds go through in a cold and moist environment. You can mimic this by placing the seeds in an air-tight ziplock back with moistened peat moss. Typically 30-90 days is what you are shooting for.
