1st Century Christians vs 21st Century Christians | The Martyrdom of Polycarp - Church History

My commentary and reading of the epistle from the early Church that recorded the martyrdom of Polycarp from Smyrna on Late Night with Lisa and Friends!

This is a letter from the apostolic age of Church history. Polycarp was a disciple of the Apostle John and a 2nd-century bishop in at the Christian Church in Smyrna who was martyred for his faith during his 80s. Christians faces harsh persecution in these days for not acknowledging polytheism, the "gods" (demons) of the Roman state, or the worship of Caeser. As a result, they were often called atheists (as you will hear them referred to as in this letter). This is a beautiful account that shows the attitude that the early Christians had when it came to persecution and martyrdom. Martyrdom is the decision to stand on the truth of the Gospel based on their faith and dare to take all risk even a death sentence or torment without doing any violence in defense. An attitude that seems to have done dormant in many modern "churches" of the 21st century. Not only was martyrdom something that Christians volunteered themselves for, but they encouraged many through their acts because the Holy Spirit had worked through them. His grace gave them courage and peace. Attempted death penalties failed, and persecution did not silence the Gospel.
