Performance Notes:

“Water Music” was composed, quite literally, to be performed on the water. It’s first performance was at the behest of King George I, on July 17, 1717, with an orchestra of approximately fifty musicians performing on a barge on the Thames River in London. The King and his entourage viewed the performance from an adjacent barge. The piece is a collection of orchestral movements, many of which were patterned after dance forms popular at the time, and it has become a staple of the Baroque literature, along with another work of Handel’s, composed some 32 years later, “Music for the Royal Fireworks.”
The pieces included in this “Album of Ceremonial Music” are crafted for ease of playing, and also to allow for seamless transitions, should longer processionals or recessionals be necessary. All key signatures are chosen to flow easily from one to another. Also, each piece in the set allows for some rest for each player in the ensemble. They may be played with or without the optional timpani and keyboard. If the keyboard is used, the passages meant as keyboard solo (shown as small “cued” notes in the brass) may be omitted as well, providing additional rest for the brass players.
Performance practice is straightforward Baroque style. Some weight should always be reserved for the downbeat of each measure. Also, it is worth noting the two-bar hemiola which occurs several times in the piece. The gesture is to essentially combine two measures into one and divide it equally into three parts. This takes place at bars 9-10, 25-26, 33-34, 37-38, 55-56, 64-65, and 72-73.
Finally, there is some ornamentation. It is common practice any time there is a repeat of a large section or a da capo, the second time through may be freely ornamented (including where it is not shown in the music). This should be reserved for the melody line and, only occasionally, the harmony melodic line just below it. First is the trill in the opening bar of the piece.
