Russia Is Changing The Tactics: Orlan-10 Krasnopol Laser-Guided Drones Strikes In Kyiv Oblast.
The Krasnopol is a 152, 155 mm cannon-launched, fin-stabilized, base bleed-assisted, semi-automatic laser-guided, artillery weapon system.
It automatically homes on a point illuminated by a laser designator, typically operated by a drone or ground-based artillery observer. In the case of the Ukrainian war, the laser point is operated by ORLAN-10 drones.
Krasnopol projectiles are fired mainly from self-propelled howitzers such as the 2S3 Akatsiya and 2S19 Msta-S and intended to engage small ground targets such as tanks, other direct fire weapons, strong-points, or other significant point targets visible to the observer. It can be used against both stationary and moving targets.
The Krasnopol system consists of the guided shell, a laser target designator, and the shot synchronization system. The laser designation system has a range of 5 kilometres, while the projectile itself has a range of 20 kilometres and a target seeker radius of 1 kilometre .
The principle of operation of the two systems, ORLAN-10 and artillery pieces, used by the Russian Federation in Ukraine, is very simple.
The artillery pieces are mobilized at a certain point. The Orlan-10 drone rises into the air.
The Orlan-10 drone searches for and identifies the target. The ground operator communicates the coordinates to the artillery batteries.
Artillery batteries charge laser-guided projectiles.
The Orlan-10 drone marks the target laser.
The batteries launch guided projectiles through the fire. These are aimed at the target, looking for the laser signature. When it is detected, it is directed towards the laser point, thus hitting the target.
Orlan-10 drones return to the main launcher, but if the action is prolonged, and they no longer have fuel, they are abandoned.
Krasnopol guided projectile have a weight of 50 kilograms, caliber of 152 millimeters and 155 millimeters, Effective firing range twenty-five kilometers.

Orlan-10 UAV Krasnopol laser-guided artillery strikes in Kyiv Oblast.
The Orlan-10 UAV is a medium-range, multi-purpose unmanned aerial vehicle which conducts aerial reconnaissance and electronic warfare. It is usually used in groups by the Russian army as it strikes enemy targets.
The Orlan-10 has multiple cameras including thermal imaging camera and radio transmitter and can offer real-time intelligence on the ground with 3D maps. The production of Orlan-10 had started in 2010
The Russian forces had conducted drills of the Orlan-10 in the Kemerovo region in southwestern Siberia last year.
Krasnopol weapons are laser-guided, artillery weapon system. It locks into a target automatically by a laser designator through a drone or ground-based artillery.
The army used the Krasnopol weapon system on howitzers against tanks and other targets. The 155mm Krasnopol artillery guided weapon system can take out bridges and other targets within a range of 3 to 20 km.
