Performance Notes:

This hymn was written in 1865, just as the American Civil War was reaching its end. The text speaks of human frailty, the pascal sacrifice, and salvation by faith. This setting, with its repeated use of pentatonic melodies, aims to capture an “Old American” feel. The opening lines should be played rubato. While the tempi are but suggestions, the player should take care not to play in too halting a manner; the lines should flow and connect with one another. The sound should be warm throughout and even at the top dynamics, the sound should remain melodic and warm. While it is preferable to play the piano part as written, the octaves in the right hand, if they are problematic for the player may be omitted, preferring the lower octave over the upper.

Suggested Instrumental Combinations:

Originally written as a flugelhorn/trumpet solo, the arrangement is playable by all brass instruments, and along with three different keys (B-flat, C, and F), it includes parts in nearly every practical key and clef. Below are the parts and the instruments which would use them for each of the three versions of the piece. It will be successful in most any octave, but the lower octaves (primarily involving notes below the bass clef staff) should be avoided as the clarity of the lower notes will be lost in the smaller intervals. As such, the F-Major version is entirely impractical for tuba.
