Why did Russia invade #Ukraine, and what does Putin want?

President Vladimir Putin denied attacking his neighbors for months, but then abandoned the peace agreement and sent troops across the northern, eastern and southern borders of Ukraine.

As the death toll increased, he was accused of undermining peace in Europe. What happened next could jeopardize the continent's overall security structure.

Why did the #Russian army attack?
After Russian leaders ordered the invasion, Russian troops advanced into the Ukrainian capital from several directions. In a pre-dawn television speech on February 24, he declared that Russia did not feel "safe, prosperous and exist" because he claimed to be a constant threat from modern Ukraine.

Airports and military bases were first attacked near cities across Ukraine, then tanks and troops rushed from north, east and south, from Russia and its allies #Belarus to Ukraine.

Much of #Putin argument is wrong or absurd. He argued that his purpose was to #protect those exposed to intimidation and slaughter, and to "demilitarize and denify" Ukraine. There is no genocide in Ukraine. It is a living democracy led by a Jewish president.

"How can I become a Nazi?" Said Volodymyr Zelensky, who likened Russia's onslaught to the invasion of Nazi Germany in World War II.

Putin has frequently accused Ukraine of being hijacked by militants since his pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych was banished in 2014 after months of protesting his rule.

Russia then retaliated by occupying the south of the Crimean Peninsula, causing rebellion in the east, and supporting separatists who had fought the Ukrainian army in a war that claimed the lives of 14,000 people.

In late 2021, Russia began deploying a large number of troops near the Ukrainian border, but repeatedly denied the attack. Putin then abandoned the eastern 2015 peace agreement and admitted that the rebel-controlled areas were independent.

Russia has long resisted the move to Ukraine's European Union and the Western defense and military alliance NATO. He announced the invasion of Russia and accused #NATO of threatening "our historic future as a nation."

How far will Russia go?
It is now clear that Russia is trying to overthrow the democratically elected Ukrainian government. The goal was to free Ukraine from oppression and "cleanse it from the Nazis."

President Zelensky said he was warned that "the enemy has set me at number one goal and my family has set me at number two."

This false story of Ukraine, captured by fascists in 2014, is regularly played on Kremlin-controlled television. Putin talked about bringing "people who have committed many bloody crimes against citizens" to trial.

It is unclear what Russia is planning for Ukraine, but it faces severe resistance from a very hostile population.

In January, Britain accused Moscow of attempting to set up a pro-Moscow doll to lead the Ukrainian government. It is alleged that Russia rejected it as nonsense at that time. One unconfirmed intelligence report suggests that Russia aims to divide the country into two.
