On a recent trip to the American Southwest, I first encountered the region of the Prescott National Forest in Northern Arizona. I was immediately struck by the scenic beauty of the place. Powerful mountains form a distant backdrop to a seemingly endless forest of sage bush. This unspoiled “high desert” also brings a palpable sense of isolation. This piece is a musical collection of descriptive adjectives: noble, beautiful, expansive, lonely, powerful.

Performance notes:

While specific tempi are noted, these are suggestions, or perhaps better named as “ideals.” If a bit slower or faster tempo will lead to a cleaner and more musical performance, it is always preferable.
Some phrases are quite long. Sometimes, the best solution is to break the phrase, however it is best to maintain the feeling of those two fragments as one phrase. As such, a quick breath and an immediate resumption of the line are the ideal.
While the sound of the euphonium is quite lyrical, the player should make every effort at attaining the cleanest (and even pointed) attacks during the marcato phrases.
