Quickie: The Smith Act

The Smith Act, or the Alien Registration Act of 1940, allowed the government to act against "extremist" organizations who didn't like all of the unconstitutional power the federal government was suddenly wielding, who dared to criticize or protest the government.

Although the Supreme Court overturned much of it, enough of it remains on the books to continue to cause problems for a free people.
