Dem Candidate for U.S. House Seat Withdraws Because of Inappropriate Tweets
A Democratic candidate in South Dakota withdrew his candidacy for a U.S. House seat after receiving backlash from tweets he made from his personal Twitter account before he decided to run for office.
Ryan Ryder was running for the seat held by Republican Representative Dusty Johnson but pulled out of the race after being scrutinized for tweets that were "a poor attempt at sarcasm" and "humor" which "crossed the line," he told the Associated Press. Several of the tweets targeted Republican politicians in the state.
In one tweet from November, Ryder suggested he was thinking of "making an animated video of me killing Johnson's family, and then saying it was just a joke." In another post from July, Ryder joked about performing sexual acts to a picture of South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, Dakota News Now reported.
"A lot of these were basically just biting sarcasm, just flippant and rude," Ryder told Dakota News Now. "A lot of these had important context on them."
When talking with the AP, Ryder explained the background for the tweet about Johnson. He said it was in response to Johnson's voting against censuring Republican Representative Paul Gosar for posting a video on Twitter of a violent cartoon that showed him killing a character who looked like New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The South Dakota Democratic Party announced in a statement on Thursday that it had asked for Ryder to withdraw from the race because of his posts.
"The South Dakota Democratic Party has determined it is not appropriate for Mr. Ryder to continue in this race and requested that he end his candidacy, which he has agreed to," said the party's Executive Director Berk Ehrmantraut.
His account is now deactivated on Twitter.
"These tweets were a poor attempt at sarcasm (and) humor. And they crossed the line and I apologized to the state and the party and I don't want them to reflect badly on the party," Ryder told the AP.
Party Chair Randy Seiler said in a statement the party does not support the kind of language used in Ryder's tweets and the "statements from Mr. Ryder do not live up to the values of the South Dakota Democratic Party."
Ryder, an Air Force veteran and lawyer, was the only Democratic challenger for South Dakota's lone congressional seat, the AP added.
Newsweek could not gain access to Ryder's campaign website. He could not be reached immediately for comment.
