Lion-Eating Poet in the Stone Den, Chinese Poem in Mandarin. aka The Story of Mr Shi Eating Lions

The Story of Mr Shi Eating Lions, a.k.a. Lion-Eating Poet in the Stone Den is a long form Mandarin Chinese poem composed entirely of one single syllable: “shi”.
It was written by a scholar named Yuanren Zhao as a mockery of the romanization of the Mandarin Chinese pronunciations in the early 20th century, an effort that he did not agree with. In his opinion, the Romanization got rid of a lot of nuances in pronunciations. So he wrote this poem to make his point. Ironically, this mockery of a poem later became his most famous work. In fact, most people alive today only knows Mr. Zhao because of this poem.

The Story of Mr. Shi Eating Lions
石室诗士施氏
Mr. Shi, the poet, lives in a stone den.
嗜狮，誓食十狮!
He likes lions, and vows to eat 10 lions!
氏时时适市视狮
He often goes to the market to look at lions
十时，适十狮适市。
At 10 o’clock, 10 lions appeared in the market
适时，适施氏适市，
At the same time, Mr. Shi showed up in the market too!
施氏视十狮，
Mr. Shi saw 10 lions
恃矢势，使十狮逝世，
He used his bow and arrow to kill these 10 lions.
施氏拾是十狮尸，
Mr. Shi picked up these 10 dead lions
适石室，石室湿，
and went to the stone den, the den was wet
氏使侍拭石室，
He asked his servant to wipe the den
石室拭，
The stone den was wiped dry
施始试食是十狮尸，
Mr. Shi begins to eat these 10 dead lions
食时，
As he was eating
始识是十狮尸，实十石狮尸。
He realized that these 10 dead lions were actually stone lions!
