ACU Senior Research Fellow Dr Kevin Donnelly, who has edited a book called 'Christianity Matters', has talked about why Christianity is still important.
Dr Donnelly said at federation in 1901, the overwhelming majority of Australians identified as Christian.
"And more recently, the latest census that's been published - I think it was only about 52 per cent - but it's still quite a significant number of people," he told Sky News host Rita Panahi.
"One of the chapters in the book is by Augusto Zimmermann - a lawyer from Perth - he quite in some detail explains how our political, our legal systems, are underpinned by Christianity."
