Sex Change of a Child is a form of Child Abuse | Walt Heyer | Ruth Institute Annual Summit

Walt Heyer is an American author and speaker who underwent gender reassignment and lived for eight years as a transgender woman before detransitioning in 1991.

Walt shared his message at The Ruth Institute 4th Annual Summit. His message on how his gender incongruence wasn't because he was in the wrong body, but because of the three people who he loved and should have been able to trust, all abused him. It all began with a purple dress from his grandmother, continued with harsh beatings to discipline him out of his love of the dress, and culminated in sexual abuse from his uncle. When he told his parents what his uncle did, they called him a liar and said his uncle would never have done anything like that.

Walt grew up to be very successful, professionally. He was a high ranking individual in the auto industry and in the tech sector, but something wasn't right. He kept going, over and over again, into a cross-dressing alter-ego and struggled with gender incongruence for years. When he finally consulted with the leading gender specialist of the day, the specialist didn't even bother to ask about the issues he had experienced as a child, but merely asserted that Walt's problem was physical and that the solution was a sex change operation. Walt lived as "Laura" for eight years, but after the euphoria of the surgery wore off, he found himself increasingly despondent. He said that one of his few friends during that time refused to call him "Laura" but instead insisted on calling him by his original name. This friend provided the truth and compassion that Walt needed to hear.
