Fashion sells us the illusion of beauty. It has the power to make an average girl suddenly appear “beautiful”. Through advertisement and the media, the technology of fashion creates a model of beauty and conditions us to see this as the supreme icon of beauty. When your average girl adopts this model, she literally “wears” it and we now see her as beautiful - but it’s not really her we’re seeing! We respond instead to the advertisement she’s wearing… these are powerful technologies and their effects run deep within our psyches and permeate our relationships. Consider this the next time you’re gawking over that plush advertisement.
