DARPA concluded their 3-year subterranean robot challenge in Sept with 10 finalists deploying autonomous systems to navigate underground obstacles in Kentucky's Louisville Mega Caverns. (Footage: Boston Dynamics)

The challenge consisted of virtual and physical trials that included tunnel, urban, and case circuits. DARPA states one of the goals is to develop robots that can help find and "rescue" humans in situations too risky for human intervention. NASA is also hoping to find useful solutions for its space expeditions.
