The fire, which was thought to have been started deliberately, threatened wildlife at Parkgate, around six miles from Liverpool city centre.

It broke out at around 6.20pm on Saturday but had been extinguished by Sunday morning.

The fire area is of special scientific interest and a reserve cared for by bird charity RSPB.

By Sunday morning there was no sign of fire but one fire engine remains at the scene, a spokesperson said.

Firefighters have carried out a complete sweep of the incident site using a thermal imaging camera.

Fire breaks had been set up to protect nearby properties.

The fire service said police have been advised it is suspected that the fire was started deliberately and a fire investigator is due to attend.
