Jonah's Rebellion: Compassion for the Lost

A sermon through the book of Jonah: a minor prophet with a major message. Jonah was a man who knew the Lord, who sought after God and separated himself unto his God - and who was sanctified and holy enough for God to call as one of His most honored of prophets; he was the only OT prophet to be sent to a Gentile nation to prophesy against it and was also the only OT prophet to serve as a type of Christ Himself. But in his zeal for God Jonah got out of balance. In his hunger for righteousness and holiness and judgment, Jonah forgot about mercy and compassion for the lost - causing him to also be the only OT prophet to rebel against the Lord's command. God even cares about people we think He should not care about and who we may even tend to hate or find completely unlovable - and He expects us to as well. We should never underestimate the great mercy and longsuffering of God toward mankind.
