Suffering For Doing Good
37th in our series the Book of 1 Peter

I. God’s Purposes for Human Civil Government - 1 Peter 2:14
A. For the punishment of evildoers
1. Justice is defined by God in His Holy Word
2. All sins are not crimes; but all crimes are sins
a. Crimes are sins to which God gives civil government punishment powers
b. For example a false witness - Deuteronomy 19:16-20
B. For the praise of those who do good - Romans 13:3-4

II. When Tyranny Prevails - 1 Peter 3:15-17
A. When you do good and your conscience confirms you are just
1. You have a good properly functioning conscience - Romans 2:14-15
2. A seared conscience - 1 Timothy 4:1-2
B. But when you are mistreated or persecuted for doing good
1. The moral order of the world is inverted - Isaiah 5:20
2. This is the very definition of tyranny
3. But the wicked will still know in their heart of hearts they are doing wrong - they will be ashamed
4. It may be the will of God that you suffer for doing what is good; the Fifth Seal - Revelation 6:9-11
C. When we suffer for doing good, we must look to and remember what Jesus did on the Cross - 1 Peter 3:18
1. Jesus suffered the greatest evil ever done, and committed against the only perfect man who ever walked this earth
2. Yet suffering that great evil accomplished the greatest good that this world has ever known - our salvation
3. We may never know this side of eternity the great good our suffering for righteousness sake accomplished - Matthew 5:10-12
