Jurjevska street (ulica) is one of Zagrebians' favorite streets and luckily it managed to preserve a lot of its old charm. It is located in the old northern part of Zagreb, leading from northernmost Upper town square - Ilirski trg (5:30) to a spacious meadow called Cmrok (37:20) and it makes a beautiful walk, especially in the autumn when the street gets its wonderful golden look. Jurjevska played a significant role in local history and many houses bear plaques stating which notable from 19th and 20th century lived there. In 1845 (while Croatia was part of Austro - Hungary) Jurjevska street was a site of massive protests against Austrian imperial politics, some protestors were killed and buried in the local cemetery right on the Jurjevska street - Jurjevsko groblje (St. George's Cemetery). This cemetery was the main cemetery in Zagreb from the beginning of 17th century to the end of 19th century for higher classes and prominent persons. With the opening of the large Mirogoj Cemetery in 1876, old St.George's Cemetery slowly fell into obscurity and today all that is left is a pretty chapel, few old gravestones and creepy local stories of ghosts seen or heard nearby (12:50).
