The war in the air proved to be pivotal for American victory during World War II. The bombers, like the B-17 and B-24, showed just how dominant American airpower had become. But this didn’t mean they were invincible. Bombers were shot out of the sky and some failed due to mechanical problems. In “Lost Airmen: The Epic Rescue of WWII U.S. Bomber Crews Stranded Behind Enemy Lines,” readers are taken on the arduous journeys of 13 downed B-17 and B-24 bomber crews. Experience the moments before, during, and after their bailouts; being found and protected by Partisans or Chetniks in then-Yugoslavia; and trying to make it back to base.

Charles E. Stanley Jr., the son of bomber pilot Charles E. Stanley Sr. who was downed twice during the war, has written an exhilarating book on a little-known part of history’s greatest conflict. This is Stanley’s first book and he is a renowned scholar on the subject of downed airmen in Yugoslavia during World War II, and has been a consultant to the National Museum of Contemporary History in Ljubljana, Slovakia. He is a regular contributor to Fox News and other newspapers and magazine outlets. He has held key positions within the state government of New York, as well as being an aide to then-Gov. George Pataki during the state’s response to the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center.
