AI Paintings - Copyright Law and the AI Revolution

An AI created a painting, and at least to my eye, an enjoyable paiting. The author of the AI wants a copyright in the painting, claiming the AI as the author and that the work is a work for hire. The copyright office has evaluated these claims, so what is the law when it comes to artificial creations?
