How to Buy Meat Directly From a Rancher: Cut Out the Middleman and Save Money

Food and gas prices are rising fast. We have an option for you to save some money on food and grocery bills. We discuss the process of buying a beef cow directly from a local rancher and processing it through a local meat processor (or butcher).This option saves you money, provides a healthier and higher quality product and supports local farms, ranches and local businesses.

We also introduce you to our new milking cows: Faun and Candy. Faun is the beginning of us learning to F.A.I.L. (First Attempt In Learning).

Meat Prices at a major grocery chain in Southern Utah:
Regular ground beef: $8/lb
Grass fed ground beef: $10/lb
Stew meat: $7/lb
T-Bone steak: $14/lb
Ribeye: $17/lb
Sirloin Steak:$20/lb

Meat Prices at a higher end grocery store in Southern California:
Grass fed ground beef: $17/lb
Sirloin: $20/lb
Ribeye (grass fed): $50/lb

Price estimates/approximations to give an idea of costs to purchase a beef:
Butcher fee: $580
$2.50/lb on the hoof (ranges $2-$4)
$4.00/lb hanging weight (ranges $3.50-$7.50)

Cow weighs approx.1400-1900 lbs on the hoof

Cost example:
Using a cow at 1500 lbs with a $2.50 on the hoof weight: $3750
Butcher fee: $580
Total: $4330
Divide by 750 lbs approximately of meat (50% yield)

$5.77 per pound for ALL CUTS (steaks, stews, roasts, ribs, etc)
