Flying Foxes LOVE Eating Mango Seeds From A Caddy Basket - Behind The Scenes Working In A Bat Aviary

Mandi had some old plant holders for putting up whole pieces of soft fruit in the bat aviary. So being a tragic online shopper, I set about trying to find her some new ones...

Well, I found these bathroom caddies or baskets and they were a BIG hit! A great size and they fit over door frames in the aviary, as well as through the metal wall frames. So they can be set at any height in the aviary.

And boy, did the bats go for the mango seeds we placed in them. They could 'attack' the fruit from all angles, from above or just hang from below.

A great enrichment tool to keep them busy and happy squabbling - hilarious!

Most people think bats or flying foxes only eat our backyard fruit or fruit in our commercial orchards. But they don't.

In fact, their natural food is pollen and nectar from over 100 species of native trees and vines.

They can eat the flowers and sometimes leaves of eucalypt, lily pilly, paperbark, and turpentine trees.

When native foods are scarce, particularly during drought, the bats may supplement this diet by eating fruit from introduced plants found in gardens, orchards, parks, and streetscaping.

Mandi has been a licensed bat carer for nearly 30 years. She lives in Southeast Queensland and cares for bats from her personal funds and any donations she may receive.

She looks after baby bats, orphaned bats, injured bats, and even geriatric bats who are allowed to live out their days in the blissful batty comfort of her loving care.

Mandi also actively supports other bat carers who need any form of assistance with bats in their care, including temporary in-house care if a carer is sick or needs to go away.

But being an individual carer and not a member of a Not-For-Profit wildlife organization, Mandi does not receive any form of government financial support or grant monies.
