Street artist paints Dostoevsky portrait in protest against censorship
A street artist in Naples has created a giant mural of Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky to protest an Italian university’s attempt to ‘cancel’ him. The artist, who goes by the name Jorit, said he and many Italians were taken aback at the University of Milano-Bicocca’s decision to remove its Dostoevsky course from the syllabus, a move which was quickly reversed following backlash.
The finished portrait will adorn a wall of the Augusto Righi Technical School of Naples, which Joris says will serve as a reminder that ‘only with culture can we understand the causes of wars and build peace.’
