Donja Stubica is a lovely little town located in the part of Croatia known as Hrvatsko Zagorje (Croatian Zagorje). It is situated on the northern slopes of Mount Medvednica - the other side of the mountain in relation to Zagreb. Hrvatsko Zagorje is a mostly rural region which lies on the gentle hills between Mount Medvednica and Croatian - Slovenian border. The word "Zagorje" actually means "behind the hills". Hrvatsko Zagorje is famous for its numerous hot springs with one of the largest thermal water facilities placed in Donja Stubica.

In the 16th century the district of Stubica was the site of a great Croatian and Slovenian peasant revolt against the feudal system that was predominant in Europe at the time. The most renowned leader of the revolt was a local peasant Matija Gubec. While his cause was defeated in the end, his legacy continued to be preserved in local folklore and history throughout the centuries.
