An island (or isle) is a small area of land surrounded by a significantly diverse environment, such as sea. Islets, skerries, cays, and keys are terms used to describe very small islands such as emergent land features on atolls. A small island off the shore is called a holm, and an island in a river or a lake is termed an eyot or ait. Chars are sedimentary islands in the Ganges delta. An archipelago is a collection of geographically or geologically connected islands, such as the Philippines. In the sea, there are two sorts of islands: continental and oceanic. Artificial islands, which are man-made, are also present.
