Skateboarding began in the 1950s in California. Roller skates were used to make the first skateboards (attached to a board). Skateboarding grew in popularity as a result of surfing; in fact, skateboarding was originally known as "sidewalk surfing." Individuals made the first skateboards out of wooden boxes and planks. As the sport grew in popularity, companies began producing skateboards in 1959. Children were commonly seen playing in the streets in postwar America. Boards were also evolving as companies attempted to make them lighter, stronger, and perform better.
