A wildfire, forest fire, bushfire, wildland fire, or rural fire is an unplanned, uncontrolled fire that begins in rural or urban areas in an area of combustible vegetation. In their natural state, some forest ecosystems rely on wildfire. A wildfire can also be classified as a forest fire, brush fire, bushfire (in Australia), desert fire, grass fire, hill fire, peat fire, prairie fire, vegetation fire, or veld fire, depending on the type of vegetation present. Wildfires are distinct from controlled burns, which are beneficial uses of fire; however, controlled burns can become wildfires.
