(二)Dylan's Review Liaofan 5A 20220130《We Think About:Am I Worthy of Respect》
So does our human life, because we're part of the universe, not some New Age stuff. It is a reality. Our life is a continuum. You can't just say: when you die, (it’s like) you are gone like a candle (burning out), this is one of the reasons why we need Dharma. This is a very serious misconception of the current world especially.
1442 So back to the point, being respectful. A person who gets respect is the person who always respects (other) people and is always respected by everyone, even though they don't get positions in terms of power in government or CEO companies, that is very narrow.
If a person is respected in the community, even though they have no titles, anything, but they are treated like royalty in the sense that they are respected so much, it is because they are (the people who) themselves respect others. If you see someone who is being respected, or in the position of worthy or demanded respect, even though that person's morals and virtues are not that good, it is because in their past lives, they have cultivated respectful hearts, and hence they got what they sow, it is fair.
15:30 It's just that in this life, they are not aware of this. That’s why Dhamma is important. They're not aware of this, their eyes aren’t open. So they thought: I was born in a wealthy family and all that, so I should be above everyone else. They don't understand, I was born here because I cultivated so many lives of giving, just to get where I am, a person who can think like that is a Bodhisattva. So that's why we need to be aware of this.
Okay, so why do we need to respect elders, because they are the ones who pass down the knowledge, pass down the foundation, and also remind the elders themselves to be worthy of respect. So don't do something that will cause more harm towards the next generation, which is not happening for our generation. Now, according to Master Chin Kung, as you can see, his era, he is 90 years old, 1920s, until now, they(we have) all forgotten about all that, or gradually forgotten about virtues and morals, and it becomes more and more prone to scientific development in order just focusing on the outside without the Human Development insight.
So it naturally becomes chasing after wealth for the sake of wealth, without thinking about leaving, you know, what we call right now, the environmental movement, leaving something for the next generation.
So, in case we think about nowadays, people, young people, don't feel respectful towards them. And then we will get old one day. We think about: Am I worthy of respect, have we done something deserving of respect from them. Back then, there was a concept of you have to respect us and all that.
But right now, to gain respect, to be worthy of respect, we need to do something that truly benefits them, or do our job, as a father, act like a father, take care of the family, as a mother, act like a mother. People who do their job, who fulfill their basic duty, obviously, being devoted to their relationships, as a husband and wife and father and son, parents and children, teachers and students, in Confucianism, we call these the five relationships 五倫, if they all do their job, naturally, the respect will form, you don't have to ask them to respect you. You can, when they(your children) are young, we tell them: you need to be respectful to people, your movements and your mannerisms need to be taken care of.
So, parents doing their job, the husband and the wife doing their job. Obviously we can't define in the old times, stay at home dads, that's not the era. What I'm saying is there has got to be someone to do the job. Be it the wife or the husband, whichever one, like, if the husband stays at home taking care of the children and the wife goes out to earn money, that's fine. As long as someone's doing the job, taking care of the children, educating them, it doesn't matter. Don't give the children to the nanny, it's not fair for the children, they need you, the parents.
Don't mess up their life. Like in the 70s and 80s, we have that experimental period. I can see their costumes and all that this is personal opinion, by the way, but I have to say that because it reflects our societies. Like after those very strict 40s and 50s, I can see all that the way they wear and the mannerism is very stringent. And then 60s, start to liberate 70s and 80s become so weird, you can see the way they wear stuff in their hair. And then 90s were like, Okay, that's enough, way too much. And then back to now everyone's normalizing a little bit.
So what I'm trying to say is, there was always a balance in the middle. And I tried to express this, using this to express what this respect is, the balance, balance of your love for that person at the same time, the mannerism you need to have.二2327
