As a predominantly Catholic country there is a custom in Croatia to visit cemetery and light candles for the deceased family members and friends on All Saints' Day (All Hallows' Day or 1st of November). Zagreb's biggest and most beautiful cemetery called Mirogoj is especially crowded on the 1st of November as people come to pay their respects to the dearly departed and in the evening cemetery looks really beautiful with all the candles lit. Seasonal fog often adds to the atmosphere since Zagreb can get quite misty in the evenings at that time of the year. Although Halloween (All Hallows' Eve or 31th of October) has become more popular in Croatia lately, local customs and traditions are far more rooted in All Saints' Day celebrations.
