Zadar has been, throughout its long and turbulent history, one of those particularly desirable cities which often find themselves in the middle of a battle or a trade, constantly changing rulers and passing from one country to another. Today, Zadar is one of the biggest Croatian coastal cities and the capital of Northern Dalmatia. Zadar was founded in 9th century BC by Liburnians, an Illyrian tribe. During Roman empire Zadar became a colonia and remains of a Roman forum can still be found in the historic center of Zadar. From middle ages onwards Zadar kept changing governments and was owned by many different countries including Byzantine Empire, Kingdom of Croatia, Kingdom of Hungary, Republic of Venice, Ottoman Empire, Austrian Empire, Napoleonic Kingdom of Dalmatia and Italy. Only at the end of the Second World War, after thorough devastation by all sides, the city was captured by Tito's Partisans and Zadar joined Croatia once again, as a part of Yugoslav federation. Since the breakup of Yugoslavia in 1991, Zadar became a city in the modern day Republic of Croatia. Such a turbulent history certainly left many marks and today Zadar is a dynamic urban center, full of culture, history and life.
