When Aboriginal children were sent to residential schools, they were often far from their homes and they lost the support of their communities. For decades, these children have been fighting for the return of their culture and the recognition of their injustices.

Since some children did not return from residential schools, people have been searching for unmarked graves in the hope of providing some closure for the families. The search revealed 169 potential unmarked graves at a former residential school in Alberta.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada recommends that all residential schools be documented and all gravesites be documented and marked.
