How are there 149 Munition Igloo Style Bunkers that were used to store T hidden in plain sight...
In 1941 when Pearl Harbor was bomber the Federal Government began to look for land to ramp up for the war effort.
In the Spring of 1942 the Federal Government seized the rural town of Alvira here in Pennsylvania and within days they moved all of the 400 or so residents and immediately demolished every home and business until nothing was left standing.
Construction of 149 munition storage units were quickly assembled - each made out of poured concrete with one door on the front - very similar to an Igloo. The entrance is sealed off with two steel doors that swing out when opened. They were built about 100 yards from one another to avoid a chain reaction should one explode.
By 1945 as WWII was looking like it would be ending the need for T was on the decline especially as other explosives were being invented and having a greater impact. With all of these factors the area of the Susquehanna Ordinance Depot became abandoned over time and Nature began to reclaim the area.
Thick woods and dense under growth has kept them hidden for decades from the public.
Today the part of the land is a State Park the rest of the original seized land was divided and houses a Federal Prison - Allenwood Federal Prison and the county has a methane dump on the other. Interesting enough the the displaced original land owners were never given their land back,
Come along as we explore the past and enter the Igloo style bunkers.
