The Testament of Abraham - 3 Minute Quran Study: Episode 13

The judgement of the souls described in the Quran is taken straight from a Jewish apocryphal text known as the "Testament of Abraham". In this episode, we will look at the respective passages in both the Quran and the Testament of Abraham. Once again, the story within the Quran is truncated and impossible to decode without knowledge of the actual context.

The Jewish apocryphal text was very popular among both Jews and Christians. It paints a specific picture of how the judgement looks like. The original audience of the Quran must have been familiar with that story, so that only a short reference was necessary without going into further detail. This underlines the origin of the Quran as a lectionary which references scriptures, it wasn't scripture itself.
