UNPLUGGED EXPLAINS
On February 18 India and the United Arab Emirates signed the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement or CEPA.
The trade deal between India and UAE bears significance as the top political leaders of the countries, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces endorsed it and was signed by India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal with UAE Economy Minister Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, in New Delhi.
This is the first free trade agreement finalized by the Narendra Modi - led government since it came to power in 2014.
The deal will come into force from May 1, 2022.
The UAE-India CEPA pact is India's first bilateral trade agreement in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region.
CEPA covering goods, services and digital trade, among others, will allow 90% of the country's exports a duty-free access to the Emirates.
