Rilke is the O.G. Sad Boy

Rainer Marie Rilke is one of the most prolific poets of all-time, but also the progenitor for the modern sad boy and sad girl archetype. In modern self-isolated consciousness, humans have the time, leisure, and knowledge to explore many internal levels of their soul. Rilke after World War One became one of the first artists to explore, define, and create metaphors for this self-isolated consciousness. However, when someone resides in self-isolated consciousness without performing "shadow work" they manifest malignant physical, mental, and emotional states. The negative actions and moods create a sad boy identity which is a defense mechanism against real individuation. Inflating a superego persona leaves a trail of destruction. Rilke's treatment of his family, odd views of sexuality, elitist viewpoints, radical politics, inflated ego, and love for the occult are staple traits of the sadboy.
