Gotham City director Matt Reeves' vision is structured rather than stretched out; the story takes place in several places, which gives Matt Reeves, Batman, an unusual sense of containment. Throw in some strong noir vibes and the richly detailed (underworld) world of Gotham, and Matt Reeves has given Batman a fun twist.

Director Matt Reeves is downright noir; Matt Reeves. Batman is immersed in storytelling, and this time DC's tenacious superhero is doing some real detective work instead of just sitting on an upgraded gaming PC doing all the work. Matt Reeves' Batman is smart, sexy and scary, and Michael Giacchino's score sounds like a baroque piano concerto with a superhero theme. For Matt Reeves, Batman, and co-writer Peter Craigs, despite the film's length (nearly three hours), the story and characters are strong enough to carry their considerable weight.

If Matt Reeves' Batman looks underdeveloped, it's Batman's relationship with his loyal butler Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis). His Penguin is closest to Matt Reeves. Batman has real comic relief, but he still feels incredibly dangerous. Robert Pattinson is up to the task, albeit with an excellent performance, and you can never doubt that this is the Batman that the villains will genuinely fear.

In his DC debut, Robert Pattinson spent most of his time playing Batman, not Bruce Wayne. Batman takes over after Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) spent "two nights" as Batman patrolling the streets of Gotham and terrorizing criminals. Robert Pattinson as Batman is obsessed with his alter ego, unaware of how his emotions drive what he does and how it explodes in his brutal murder of any criminal that comes his way.

Including the character and many of the franchise's trademarks: Catwoman (the devious Zoë Kravitz), Penguin (Colin Farrell, almost unrecognizable), loyal butler Alfred (Andy Serkis, completely analog) and an epic car chase including the latest iteration of the Batmobile - even Christopher Nolan electrifies a tight, ultra-dark process with an added level of excitement that justifies the running times of relatively demanding films. As exciting as Christopher Nolan has been, and now Reeves is taking on Batman, everything gravity can make is, well, heavy. Reeves' film hints that somewhere in the process, someone - probably Christopher Nolan - decided that Batman films weren't supposed to be funny anymore.
