Iowa tornadoes leave at least 7 dead, multiple injured and buildings damaged

At least seven people were killed in central Iowa on Saturday after a storm system brought multiple tornadoes that swept through several counties, injuring multiple people, ​blew down trees and damaging buildings.

Officials in Madison County said four people were injured and six were killed when one tornado touched down in the area southwest of Des Moines near the town of Winterset at about 4:30 p.m. local time. Among those killed were two children under the age of five and four adults.

In Lucas County, southeast of Des Moines, one person died and multiple others were injured when a separate tornado hit the area less than an hour after the one in Madison County.

Gov. Kim Reynolds has issued a disaster proclamation for Madison County.
