U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met on 21 January in Geneva amid fears that Russia may invade Ukraine. While there was no significant outcome in the meeting, the diplomats agreed to meet again in first week of February.

Lavrov said after the meeting that Moscow has security concerns "not about invented threats but real facts that no one hides - pumping Ukraine with weapons and sending hundreds of Western instructors. He also mentioned that Moscow will receive a written response to its "concrete security demands next week."

Blinken said that the "situation has reached a critical moment."
