The former leader of Mexico's Sinaloa Cartel, 64-year-old El Chapo (real name Joaquin Guzman Loera), was sentenced to life in 2019, but his case was finally resolved on 25 January, when the 2nd circuit court of appeal upheld his conviction. El Chapo, now, loses all chances of escape.

His case was dubbed as "Trial of the Century." He is currently serving out his life imprisonment at ADX Florence in Colarado.

El Chapo was accused of smuggling more than a million kilograms of cocaine from Mexico to the United States, alongside large quantities of marijuana and heroin. According to prosecutors, El Chapo "used murder, kidnapping, torture, bribery and other illegal methods to control territory throughout Mexico."

While El Chapo is out of picture in Mexico, the Sinaloa Cartel remains one of the world's most powerful drug trafficking organisations. The group is now split into two major factions, one headed by Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada and the other led by El Chapo's adult sons, who are known as Los Chapitos.
