Here we read the first Part of St. Bernard de Clairvoux's book on Humility and Pride. It contains an interesting preface and summary, as well as the first two chapters of the book. Here we can see how Saint Bernard was requested by his secretary and biographer Godfrey, also known as Geoffrey of Clairvaux, to expand on St. Benedict's Steps of Humility. St. Bernard explains how he was anxious about his ability to do so. He was first worried that he might not be good enough for the project, then that in possibly doing well, he may be praised and struggle with arrogance himself.
