Reclining Buddha - 3 Temple Tour - Ayutthaya
Wat Lokaya Suttha - Wat Lokaya Sutha is situated in the west of Ayutthaya, south
of Wat Worachettharam. No evidence demonstrated when the temple was constructed. However, from the comparative studies of the architectural styles of the Main Pagoda (Prang), it was discovered that the Main Prang in Wat Lokaya Sutha was similar to those in Wat Ratchaburana, Wat Mahathat, and Wat Som, which were all built in the Early Ayutthaya Period. Therefore, it can be assumed that Wat Lokaya Sutha was also built during the same period. The temple layout was aligned towards the east-west axis, with the main prang located in the center. In front of the prang are three Sermon Halls (Vihara) constructed in alignment next to one another. Behind the Prang is an Ordination Hall (Ubosot) and a Vihara residing the Reclining Buddha (Phra Buddha Sai Yat). From the archaeological excavations of the temple's premises, it was discovered that the temple was built in the Early Ayutthaya Period and that the temple's compound had been constantly used until Late Ayutthaya Period. In 1954, the restoration of the Reclining Buddha was conducted by re-sculpturing the whole Buddha image on top of the old one and changing the head style to be the style as seen today.
Wat Wora Chet The Ram - This Temple is behind the royal palace inside the city wall to the west. Accoring to Ayuttaya annals. the temple was built by King Eankthosarot 1593 the year King Naresuan the Great died whule leading an army to attact King Tong-U in
Burma. in honour of his elder brother, King Eakathosrot build a mighty crematorium here and some 10,000 monk were invited to
the Royal cremation.
The main ancient shrine of the temple is a large brick and mortar Sukhothat - a bell shaped stupa. Inside the temple wall
there are many buildings used for religious ceremony’s.
Wat Wora Pho - Wat Wora Pho is located in the west of Cha Krai Ya (Klong Toh) canal. No evidence has been found to indicate when it
was built. According to some part of Ayutthaya annals. Phra Si Sin who later become King Song Tham (1620-1628) was a famer highly ranked monk at this temple. So the temple was undoubtedly built before the reign of King Song Tham. Formerly. the temple was know as Wat Ra Kang or the temple of the bell. In the reign of King Barom kot (1732-1758) the name of the temple was changed as Wa Wora Pho. This because of pha Si Maha pho Tree was sent to the king from Ceylon and it was planted at this temple. All buildings in the temple faces to the east.
