Phoenix couple loses AARP home insurance for adopting pit bull mix

Bully breeds are common pets. However, did you know that several homeowners' and renters' insurance companies across the United States don't allow policyholders to own certain dog breeds or what appear to be certain dog breeds, such as pit bulls?

The Wiggs family in Arizona learned this the hard way. They've had two of their homes insured with The Hartford Insurance for 20 years and said they've always owned dogs during those 20 years without any issues.

About five months ago in late September, the family adopted what the animal shelter presumes is a pit bull mix named Echo after losing one of their Australian Shepards. She's about two years old. Then, in February, the Wiggs found out their homeowners' insurance was dropping them after a routine walk-through, even though the family says Echo doesn't have any violent or aggressive history.

There's also a bill turning heads in Arizona that could change everything for insurance companies and dog owners alike.
