Warning gunshots from Ukraine security officers were heard at a Kyiv train station on Friday as crowds tried to flee the city forced their way onto trains.

At least 100,000 people have been uprooted in Ukraine, and have fled their homes since Russia launched its assault on Thursday.

Residents sheltered in an underground metro station in Kyiv on Friday night, a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin launched an invasion that has shocked the world.

28-year-old IT specialist Kostyantyn said he planned to go to Lviv but didn't know "how the situation will look like next."

"It's all a fraud. They are lying to soldiers who are heading to us," he said, adding that his message to Russian troops "don't attack us."

UN agencies said as many as five million people could try to flee abroad.

Kyiv has banned fighting-aged men from leaving the country, and at borders with Poland, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia, those crossing were mostly women and children.
