Having just bought a Liebherr fridge and been immensely impressed by it I wanted to buy an under-counter freezer from the same excellent company. Some of their freezers were too expensive but this one variously priced at around £400 did not seem too bad.

The freezer arrived very well packaged along with an extensive multi-language user guide and two Cold Storage Accumulators - plastic boxes of freezer material designed to preserve the temperature should the power fail and which are also available as accessories for around £18 each.

As with all Liebherr devices, build quality is first rate and the freezer has the quality feel to it expected of a high end device. The door feels good and heavy and closes with a satisfying clunk, the internal trays feel well made and robust, the controls are slick and easy to use. The door hinges are well made, heavy duty, and can be reversed.

Unlike with many freezers, this one has a useful front panel LCD to show the current internal temperature and which is backlit and lights up when any control panel button is pressed, although annoying the lighting turns off after a few seconds. The other control penal features are buttons for power on/off, Superfrost cooling, temperature up/down and alarm cancellation. There is a child lock feature controlled here which prevents the freezer from being turned off or the temperature changed.

There are four identical internal removable drawers with the 'FrostSafe' feature which means each forms a separate sealed compartment to keep the temperature steady when the freezer door is opened. The plastic fronted compartments can be removed to access the contents. The drawers sit on glass shelving which can be repositioned as required to allow for the freezing of larger items.

Another interesting feature is the 'Superfrost' function which allows the temperature to be taken down to -32 °C to fast freeze items before automatically returning to the normal freezing temperature which is - -18 °C by default but which can be user defined.

There is also what is called 'SmartFrost', which is claimed to reduce ice build up, freeze food faster and reduce costs but how it is different from rivals is not made clear. But do take note that this is not a frost-free freezer and will need to be manually defrosted over time.

The freezer has an alarm, controllable through the front panel, which gives an audible alert and flashes the temperature display when the temperature gets above freezing.

This is an attractively designed freezer with a range of features available for a price that is pretty good considering those features and the high end build quality.
