5 Health Benefits of Turmeric:

1. Anti-Inflammatory

Turmeric contains around 3% of its weight of curcumin. Curcumin has incredibly strong anti-inflammatory properties, so powerful it is as strong or stronger in some studies then anti-inflammatory drugs. Curcumin targets at the molecular level and blocks NF-kB, a molecule that at its root activates genes related to inflammation right in the cells of the nuclei. This is believed to be a major contributer to chronic diseases. It should be noted as well that curcumin doesn’t have any adverse side effects like most pharmaceutical drugs do. If you have inflammation you should start juicing turmeric everyday and take black pepper with it. Black pepper contains piperine which increases the bioavailability, or absorption. One study showed an increase in absorption of 2000% from ingesting 2g of curcumin and 20mg of piperine.

2. Arthritis Healing

Turmeric has been proven in studies to reduce arthritis in patients, in one study patients with rheumatoid arthritis responded better with a treatment of curcumin then a prescription drug. Turmeric’s health benefits to arthritis shouldn’t come as a surprise given its anti-inflammatory properties. A reduction in inflammation, has been proven in studies, to alleviate arthritic pain.

3. Fights Cancer

Curcumin in turmeric has been proven to limit cancer cell growth, development and being spread at the molecular level. Studies have shown that it also contributes to the death of cancerous cells as well as the reduction of angiogenesis which is the growth of new blood vessels in tumors. There have been plenty of studies on animals that have shown a reduction in tumor growth like this one at The Journal of Cancer Research. There have been studies that show turmeric is effective in slowing or stopping breast cancer.

4. Fights Depression

Depression is linked to a shrinking hippocampus, which is the area of the brain related to memory and learning, and to low brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels. Curcumin, in turmeric, boosts BNDF levels which can reverse depression. These results have been shown in a study in the The Scientific World Journal.

5. Weight Loss

Turmeric combined with black pepper and quercetin (derived from onion skin), or CPQ, are great for weight loss. Together they fight diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity. CPQ contains flavonoids which are responsible for decreased glucose transport. Glucose is carbohydrates that are converted in your body to energy / blood sugar. If you have a slow release of glucose then your body will use that energy throughout the day but if you eat something that has a fast glucose absorption like refined sugar / cane sugar / agave nectar, it ends up in your blood making it sticky. In turn that starts to clog your arteries to your heart and kidneys.
