Honeywell 5800RPS: Program to L7000
This video shows you the unique features and design of the Honeywell 5800RPS spring plunger security sensor.
Sensors are the foundation of an effective alarm system. While the most common sensors are magnetized, that’s not the only option available. The 5800RPS is a different type of alarm system sensor with some unique uses. This video guide covers the installation and use of the Honeywell 5800RPS for the L7000 home security system.
The 5800RPS is a rolling plunger switch. As visible in the video, the sensor looks quite different than the traditional alarm sensors. Most alarm sensors have two parts: a sensor and a magnet. They’re both small, rectangular devices which you attach to the door or window.
The 5800RTS has a small plunger attached to long wires. A spring-loaded button will pop out unless an external force presses against it. For instance, a closed door will keep the plunger switch within the device. When the door opens, the sensor is released.
When the plunger switch emerges from its housing, it’ll engage the zone, resulting in either a fault or an alarm depending on the armed/unarmed status of the system. While most sensors have two parts, the 5800RTS is just one device. Connection with the plunger is the key.
As described in the video, there are pluses and minuses to the 5800RTS. The device is easy to conceal but also has a slightly elevated risk for failure over a long period of time.
The plunger is powered by a spring. While the overall quality of the construction is very high, any moving parts do have an increased risk of failure. After 10 years, you want to watch the spring for any signs of weakness. If the spring fails, the plunger won’t pop out correctly.
On the other hand, there are lots of benefits to the unique design. This sensor is installed on the hinge side of the door. So the sensor is triggered even if the door opens only slightly.
Plus, the small sensor fits inside the doorframe. Once installed, the 5800RTS is very difficult to see. If someone were to case your property, they’d have a hard time noticing this sensor.
The video walks you through the installation process. You will need to drill a small hole for the sensor. Each sensor includes a flexible antenna for wireless connection to the control panel.
The antenna is about six inches long. For best performance, the antenna needs to be fully extended. If the antenna becomes bunched up, the signal won’t be as strong. The sensor includes a plastic straw which can house the antennae, so it remains straight even when inside a wall.
The video guide shows you how to connect the sensor to the main unit. You’ll enter the Security Tools section using your Installer Code. The serial number of the sensor will need to be added to a new zone. You can either enter the number manually or activate the sensor three times for automatic activation.
Finally, the tutorial shows you how to correctly label the sensor’s location. You can use the 5800RPS for both internal and external doors. The unique design works well in areas where you don’t want the alarm to be noticed.
While the traditional magnetized sensor is great for all-purpose use, the 5800RPS plays a more specialized role in home security.
