We had an old fashioned Pig Pickin' and it sure was loads of fun!! I thought I'd upload it just in case you want to have one yourself, but ain't quite sure how it's done.

We all chipped in and bought the pig. It weighed 150 lbs. and cost $300.00 dollars US. We bought it from the local butcher who skinned it for us so that we didn't have to get the razors out and shave it ourselves. (Pigs have hair on them.) The butcher also cleaned the pig (Took the guts out.) It has to be cleaned right after it's put down because the innards will start to rot right away.

The Mezzanine grate cost $90.00 US and we bought it from a steel shop about 30 miles away. (48 kilometers) The grate was 8 feet x 3 feet in dimension. Cinder blocks cost about $1.00 or so each.

Contrary to popular belief, a pig is not salty tasting when it's not processed, so you'll have to add salt and pepper.

Each person who came to our pig picking not only ate but also got to take home about 5 lbs. of meat. That means most couples took home 10 lbs.

You should plan on it taking 24 hours to cook, although ours was ready in 16 hours. Our fire was a little too hot. You'll need several plates or bowls to put the meat in. It'll take several people with forks and knives to "pick" the meat off of the bone.

If you've never had a pig pickin', consider giving it a try. It's definitely a challenge, but it tastes good and is a lot of fun.
