I have been busy testing the V-Log L image profile on the Panasonic GH4 ever since I first got it. It is a true flat image profile on the GH4 and also on the new GH5 camera which allows you to capture 12 stops of dynamic range instead of the 10 stops you get with the built in image profiles that both these camera offer.
Having the ability is always great, but it's important to know how to properly use this new function. From my tests I found that recording internally on the GH4 using the V-Log L profile just wasn't worth it because it drastically increased the noise in the shadows and also the compression artifacts were more visible.
However those problems did not exist when using V-Log L with an external recorder that allows you to capture in 10bits instead of just 8bits internally. Also the external recorders can all capture in 422 color space versus 420 internally.
I used the Atomos Assasin recorder because that's what I have but now there are newer recorders on the market that offer even more functionality. The best deal out there right now for a 4K recorder and monitor is the BlackMagic Design Video Assist. If you have more money to spend and want the absolute best then the Atomos Shogun Inferno 4K Recording Monitor is the way to go. If you want something in between then Atomos also offers the amazingly functional Ninja Flame.

Of course if you are planning on buying the new Panasonic GH5 camera then you don't even need an external recorder since that camera now records 4K video in 10bits and 422 color space internally. So once you get the GH5 just buy the V-Log L function from B&H for $97.99 and you are good to go.
