Tiny Rare Boxwood Sculptures

-135 known boxwood carvings
-These tiny boxwood carvings are thought to have been created between the years of 1500 and 1530 in either the Netherlands or Flanders
-These tiny carvings consist of prayer beads, rosaries and altar pieces
-They are all carved out of boxwood and held together by tiny pins smaller than grass seed
-The pins are disguised in a way you can’t even see them, this was only revealed after some of the pieces were x-rayed
-The prayer beads were created to be worn as devotional objects that a Catholic would use to count off prayers at the end of a rosary.
-The boxwood spheres open can be opened to reveal religious scenes from the Bible.
-A woodworking specialist tried to recreate one and took a full week to recreate just the outer shell with the help of machinery
-This recreation was done with maple wood, as working with boxwood is quoted as “It’s like drilling out concrete”
-These rare miniature boxwood carvings are quite valuable, they sell at auction for $230,000
-A conservation speciality was tasked with taking one of the 500 year old artifacts apart, he didn’t even touch it for 6 months until they have ct scans to show exactly how it was put together
-Images and scans have been taken for which researchers will try to recreate one of the minatures with a 3d printer, the only problem is the detail of the scupture is far ahead of the printers.
-They waited 5 years for the technology to get better but they are still waiting before they can actually print one in full detail.
-Now a fun fact about boxwood, it was a prized and sought after type of wood but not only for carving. It was actually used in conjunction with cabbage to dye hair blonde as early as the 11th century
